(Player Spotlight) - Glenn Barretto #33 - [Defense Captain] - Outside Linebacker, Specialty Teams, and Place Kick Holder. *Leader of the "Orient Express"
Glenn was our Defensive Captain and starting outside linebacker in 1984. His command of the defense held the twelve opposing teams we faced to a total 132 points between them. Glenn could read offenses masterfully and rarely got beat on the gridiron. Old-school tough name taker. I played football with Glenn for five seasons. Every year Glenn was a starter and a solid leader. He anchored three undefeated football teams in 1980 with the Travis Redskins, 1982 undefeated and unscored-upon JV team and the 1984 12-0 Section Champs. The teams Glenn led went 45-4-2. Glenn was 5'9" and 170 lbs but his size did not dictate his play. He was fierce and unstoppable. He hit like a brick wall. As a linebacker Glenn never failed. When he stuck opposing players their dentists were happy for the work. He was a teeth rattler. The linebacker crew Glenn led was known as the "Orient Express." He was the defensive equivalent of Bryan Batchan, in that he took names, plenty of names, and stored them in a very large warehouse. The 1984 Vanden Viking defense squad under Glenn was one of the best in California. Thanks for the memories, Glenn. You took names.
